THE HOURGLASS

Just yesterday I saw it full
And didn't see them slip,
The sands of time, days of her life,
Fall from the hourglass.

Did I not notice Mama age,
See brown turn into white,
See one who used to lope and sprint
Begin to lose the race?

Children grew to middle age,
What did that say of her,
How did I fail to see the change...
See glass no longer full?

I ask myself, what size the glass,
For all's not equal, see.
For some, it's but a thimble,
And few the sands within.

The glass was full...just yesterday
Today the tide has turned,
I see the sands rush out to sea...
How many grains are left, Mama?
