UNLESS WE KNOW THE VALLEYS

The one who’s walked on jagged stone,
Can truly know of sorrow’s tears,
And cry for those who so sojourn,
For you have felt life’s vicious sneers.

With words of comfort and of love,
You reach to help those in travail,
And lead them to the Lord above,
Because you’ve walked this bloody trail.

It’s through the hurt that caring draws
And fills the heart with empathy,
And those who love care not the cause,
For hearts that know feel sympathy.

Must our own feet hurt, cut and bleed,
Before we feel a brother’s pain,
Or can’t we see a soul in need…
Until we too have known the rain.
